Why this works without glasses
The glasses are only a filter: the red lens blocks everything but the red channel, the cyan lens everything but green and blue. Splitting the channels here does the same job, and shows each eye's picture directly.
For a puzzle, the interesting part is usually not the 3D effect but the fact that the two views are not quite the same picture. Setting the view to Difference cancels everything they share and leaves whatever was added to one eye alone, often a line of text that's invisible in the combined image.
