Reading text that is only a few pixels tall

A surprising number of puzzle images simply have the answer written on them in tiny or very low-contrast text, usually near an edge. Enlarging with nearest-neighbour keeps the pixel grid crisp, which matters when the text is only a few pixels tall and any smoothing turns it to mush.

If nothing shows up here, the message is probably not in the visible picture at all. Try the Channel & Levels Explorer for something hidden in one colour channel, or the Bit Plane & LSB Viewer for something below the threshold of sight entirely.

  • Channel & Levels Explorer Split an image into its red, green, blue and alpha channels, stretch the contrast and posterise it to make faint hidden shapes visible.
  • Error Level Analysis Show which parts of a JPEG have been edited, by finding the regions that compress differently from the rest.
  • Bit Plane & LSB Viewer Inspect every bit plane of an image and pull out messages hidden in the least significant bits.
