How least-significant-bit hiding works

Changing the lowest bit of a colour channel moves it by one step out of 256, far too small to see. Do that across a whole image and there's room for several kilobytes of hidden data that leaves the picture looking untouched.

There is no standard for it, which is why this page has so many switches: every tool that hides data picks its own channel order and its own way of packing bits into bytes. Try every setting runs the combinations that turn up in practice and ranks them by how much readable text falls out, which is usually quicker than reasoning about it.

One thing worth knowing: this only survives in lossless formats. A JPEG is re-compressed when it is saved, and that throws the low bits away. If an image arrives as a PNG or a BMP when a photograph would normally be a JPEG, that is itself a hint.
